The Temple Mount was such an important place with a rich history that in every handful of dirt you can find jewelry, seal impressions, ancient weapons, decorated floors from the Temple, and countless other special items that will enter the pages of history.

What do you do during the activity?

After listening to the story of the soil that was removed from the Temple Mount in the dead of night, you will set out to search for archaeological finds yourselves. Now, you can be the next to contribute to this effort. More than 260,000 people have already taken part in the soil-sifting work, and thanks to them thousands of diverse artifacts have been uncovered. The name of the person who finds each special discovery is recorded. Visitors who have uncovered rare finds have even been featured in the media in Israel and around the world.

What’s the story in brief?

It all began in 1999 during illegal construction works carried out on the Temple Mount at the initiative of the Muslim Waqf. At that time, enormous quantities of soil containing archaeological remains of great historical value were excavated and dumped into the Kidron Valley, nearly lost forever. Since the Temple Mount itself is inaccessible for archaeological excavation, sifting the soil removed from it provides a rare opportunity to uncover the archaeological treasures hidden within the mountain’s earth.

Excited? Come be an archaeologist for a day and help rescue and uncover ancient remains from the most important site in the heritage of the Jewish people!

Important notes:

  • The activity offered to visitors lasts about two hours and does not involve physical exertion.
  • The soil-sifting site offers suitable conditions for all seasons, including during heatwaves.
  • Mitzpe HaMasu’ot is located at the highest point in Jerusalem and benefits from frequent cooling breezes.
  • The sifting activity is carried out using water, which greatly helps relieve the heat.
  • In winter and on rainy days, the activity takes place inside a greenhouse, and the sifting is done using heated water.
